Name: (331845739494) Alec McDowell. While Alec was never originally given a last name beyond his number designation "X5-494," he was named by Max another transgenic who'd escaped from Manticore originally eleven years prior with a squadron that all decided names for each other. She suggests the name Alec as in, smart aleck, to which he concedes that he's fine with living up to his name quite sardonically. Max rebuttals with, "Good, because my second choice was Dick." The last name was given to the character by one of Dark Angel's writers whose favorite actor was Malcolm McDowell. It was never revealed in the show that this was, in fact, his chosen last name like Max's prior choice of "Guevara," after Che Guevara. In the writer's commentary for, "Designate This," it is said that Alec was originally conceived as being like McDowell's character Alex in A Clockwork Orange but instead adapted otherwise. Alec has used aliases as an assassin or while remaining undercover outside of Manticore to help him better function and to keep his transgeneticism a secret. He was Simon Lehane, which was used under the false pretenses of being a piano instructor when assigned to assassinate Robert Berrisford a Manticore subcontractor who'd become curious as to the program and what it entailed. Monty Cora is an alias he used while posing as a cage fighter in the inner city after Max jeopardized the military base and they were forced to burn it to the ground, ultimately leaving all of the transgenics and anomalies, including him, to fend for themselves in populated cities. The name "Cash," is one he used while posing as an illegal interest businessman swindling people for more than just games of pool and earning himself a wealth that supported his permissive ego. Obviously, in his twenty or twenty-one years being a Manticore operative and assassin there are bound to be more but these are the three that we know for certain. Door: As of the last app, door pass made it Dominant. Canon: Dark Angel Canon Point: 2x18 ("Dawg Day Afternoon") Age: Unstated, the X5s and their timeline insinuate that he would be twenty or twenty-one. Appearance: one, two, pictured left. History: here Personality: *** for the purposes of this app his positive traits have been underlined and his negative traits are bold. Early on it’s clear that while the other X5’s struggled with what they were, specifically those from Max’s barracks that had earlier escaped that Alec had no problem with being a genetically enhanced specimen and considered it a blessing. He’s fine with Manticore’s so-called principles and accommodates them with an ease that speaks of experience and aplomb. His vast intellect, the power he retains, and his genetic build-up aren’t points of grief for him and he’s unashamed of playing to these strengths should the situation call for it. While he resides himself to an aloof sort of behavior in the face of Max’s triumphant rebelliousness his own whims, wants, and desires aren’t catered around freedom or an escape and it’s clear that he’s comfortable with what he has and who he is. Genetically empowered, is a term that he himself has used and the talents that he has because of his design are often applied with no regard for anyone but himself. Selfishness in the way with how he handles people and situations as a whole. Self-assured and blatantly so Alec hides nothing of his confidence around spectators or those that he’s working with or even manipulating. He goes so far as to pass open judgment toward Joshua referring to him as a thing with obvious disregard for his life or anything other than the task at hand and building his own ego. When he’s corrected he’s able to shrug it off like nothing ever happened and touches down on the thought again with, “Yeah, yeah sasquatch why not make yourself useful and help us out?” Other people’s feelings aren’t very important to him or his needs and he doesn’t cushion his thoughts or words to better deliver them. Instead, he’s upfront, loud, and blunt with what he’s doing or whatever he’s trying to relay. This lack of delicateness is pervaded throughout his entire time with Max and the changes and minor adjustments that he slowly undergoes as a character. While he endures a metamorphosis that distinctively earns him empathy and loyalty that wasn’t there at first the cocky and forthright way that he addresses most situations never quite dies. Soft-spoken is not something that he’s ever been, he carries himself with arrogant regard for his broad intellect and often uses this aptitude to deliver sardonic and maliciously overt judgments with not a care as to how the receiver of these words might feel about them. He openly displays his wisdom with boastful precision announcing himself as the swaggering genius that Manticore made him. He regales no one without thinking of himself first and throws around his savvy by saying things like, “Would you like some hydrogenated imitation pork product?” in reference to pork rinds he was offering one of the soldiers that they were trying to save, that he thought mostly trivialized his attempts to get a footing and stay undercover in the atmosphere he’d been forced to survive in. “When the going gets cute, the tough get going,” is another reference to his unabashed pridefulness and his regard to himself and his nature as he makes an effort to leave the convoy that he’d become unwillingly involved in. Functioning as a sole contributor to his life and his needs Alec at first shows great prowess with living alone and being able to manage himself. In fact, you might say it’s what he prefers. As an assassin for Manticore, he left the base several times and has a large idea of how life works. He’d rather be isolated from the heat of emotional codependency than someone catering to a friendship or relationship and is empathetically and emotionally distanced from everyone that he comes into contact with as a basis. He tries to have no regard for anyone but himself to keep himself protected from thwarts and things that might have a more negative effect on his person or what he’s trying to achieve. He has no problem separating himself from even those that care about him or regard him as someone to look up to and even in helping another person it’s clear that while his heart is in the right place and that there may be good intention beneath the ostentatious behavior he always puts himself first in everything that he does. Survival is his main priority and for the longest time, he believed that relationships, friendships, and long extended feelings were an affliction to that requirement. Being as egocentric as he is Alec has ways in which to keep the behavior standard. Unlike his curt honesty and the blasé way in which he regards life as a whole he’s also condescending toward those that he believes are beneath him and indifferent to superiority in ranks or strength and ability as a whole. In the episode “Bag ‘Em,” he spends a great portion of the time that should be spent engaging in finding a way away from Ames White’s soldiers sitting on his ass and throwing pieces of popcorn at an X-7 that’s communicating with others elsewhere in the city through ultrasonic means in a language of universal coding. He openly insults the younger soldier and continues the behavior while the others put effort into managing their time wisely. His haughty disregard for docility and supercilious behavior is integral and one of the overarching themes of his character and the way that he chooses to handle things. Alec is playful to a certain point and very dangerous if pushed beyond it. Through his time spent with Max the smaller and more positive traits that he maintained were brought more to life and unearthed from beneath his insolence and stinginess. Small gestures like trying to protect or coerce a unit into taking care of themselves without his help are brought upon and reflected on and they grow to a still visible extent. His ardor and passion are directed toward a better cause and shown in the way that he concedes to put his life on the line for Max and her missions and associates with her friends like Original Cindy, Joshua, and Logan. Their fighting adversity and judgment allows him to have a driving ambition that isn’t himself and while gaining a sense of worth that isn’t based around conceit he’s also gaining relationships that too change him and open him up to new ideas, aspects, and a sense of demure he wouldn’t have otherwise had. While the main part of his personality is indeed a wry sense of ironic and self abiding judgment he’s also capable of going to great lengths for what he thinks is right and stays dedicated to those causes through loyalty and appreciation for what he’s doing and what he’s gaining from it. Once you have Alec on your side you just can't get rid of him, he'll stick like glue. The loyalty once founded is impossible to dissuade and the trust there even less likely to break. He doesn't hand it out willingly and it's by force of earning that it's even accomplished at all. He sticks to those that deserve the behavior from him and while still wily and assertive with a silver tongue that speaks measures of expertise when handling others the recognition of his friendship and the devotion applied to those that are blessed with it is broad and indefatigable. Powers and Abilities: As is standard with X5s (and partially shared with the other transgenics), he has many superior physical traits, including: • Enhanced strength, speed, agility, reflexes, durability, stamina, and coordination, including the ability to jump extremely high. • Accelerated healing with stem cells and metabolism, which makes it very difficult to become drunk. • Enhanced eyesight, which allows him to see perfectly in the dark and selectively zoom in on objects from great distances, and hearing. • Enhanced immune system—all transgenics were made immune to all common bio-warfare agents. • Eidetic memory. • Genius level IQ. Although he appears to be an ordinary human (except for the bar code on the back of his neck that's genetically encoded into his DNA), he possesses extraordinary physical strength, able to overpower a man three times his weight, his reflexes are superhumanly fast, and his eyesight and sense of hearing and smell are extremely acute, which, along with his training, would make it very hard for someone or something to catch him by surprise. He can leap great distances vertically, allowing him to jump over a barbed fence, and is capable of sprinting at extreme speeds allowing him to blur, making it very difficult for anyone to catch him on foot, except another transgenic. X5s have enhanced night vision, to the point where they can see well in very little light, and telescopic vision, allowing them to selectively zoom in, and view objects from a distance. All transgenics have a high number of stem cells in their blood allowing them to have extremely high regeneration rates. However, if an X5's organ becomes extremely damaged, such as a bullet to the heart, it has to be replaced and can only be replaced with an X5 or bio-mechanical substitute. All X5s are O-negative blood typed and are universal donors but can only receive from another X5. Their metabolisms are extremely high, thus making them almost completely insusceptible to alcohol and possibly poisons. X5s are very dexterous and have extraordinary agility and coordination and advanced lung capacity, allowing them to perform complicated acrobatic and gymnastic maneuvers that would be very difficult for a human, with ease. The X5s were also designed to be physically attractive. In addition to his superior physique, Alec possesses a genius-level I.Q. and problem-solving skills. He is very gifted at assessing people and situations, which makes him highly adaptive to change and able to learn and mimic with extreme speed and accuracy.
